Eye Camp in Ghana
During the summer 6 eye surgeons and 8 nurses flew to Ghana from the UK. They were there to participate in the ongoing sight saving project ‘Touch of Light’.
During the two week eye camp, which was based at the Volta regional hospital at Ho, 3677 patients were seen, 202 cataract operations were performed and training was given to local doctors and nurses. £25,000 of specialist eye care equipment was left and donated.

This project brings eye-care and surgery to cure blindness to communities that do not have facilities within reach, due to their remote location and lack of roads.
Altomed helped out in a small way by donating various products for use in surgery, which supported people who really made a difference, - the surgeons and nurses who sacrificed their time and were generous with their skills and knowledge.

Working with quality tools
Despite episodes of publicity for throw-away instruments Altomed is finding that demand remains strong both for our reusable instruments and the Microwash tray range.
Concerns surrounding ‘throw-aways’ such as environmental issues and their higher annual running costs, as well as the UK governments huge investment in modern CSSD equipment, have made people think carefully about going down the disposable route.
Altomed’s instruments, most of which are made by craftsmen in the UK, are capable of long service. They are also of sufficient quality to withstand future repair and maintenance. Aftercare and warranty are concepts still very much alive and well at Altomed.

New decontamination methods, utilising new washers, solutions and trays mean that instruments are cleaned and sterilized to a higher level then ever before. Obviously in ophthalmic surgery, hard-to- clean small lumen items such as cannulae and critical devices such as phaco knives are best supplied in a single-use format. Altomed therefore brings you the best available single-use cannulae and knives from Sterimedix (UK) and Mani (Japan).
Siluron 2000; a new oil from Fluoron
Siluron 2000 is unique mixture of long silicone oil molecules which have been mixed with Siluron 1000 (1000mPas) oil to create a an excellent tamponade that resists the naturally occuring lowering of viscosity while in the eye. Therefore it is thought that emusification will be less likely.

It also exhibits the bonus feature of being relatively easy to dispense. The injection time is approximately half of that when using 5000mPas oils.
Siluron 2000 is available in 10ml syringes and vials from Altomed. For further details and a sample, (while sample stocks last), please email sales@altomed.com or telephone 0191 5190111
